How does Local Auto-Backup work in Heptabase?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

When you close the Heptabase desktop app, it automatically creates a local backup file. This backup saves your data's positions, states, and metadata—but it doesn't include attachments.

Local auto-backups help you quickly recover the positions and states of items, provided the original files are still available locally. They can't restore deleted attachments or help transfer data to a new device.

To back up all your attachments, perform a manual full backup:

  1. Go to Settings → Backup.

  2. Under Export & Manual Backup, click Export Now.

  3. Save the exported file securely (e.g., cloud storage or external drive).

Tip: Back up your data manually on a regular schedule—weekly or monthly is recommended. You can also delete older, unused auto-backup files to free up disk space.

To restore backup files, follow the instructions in this article.
