Troubleshooting performance and lag issues in Heptabase

Updated over a week ago

I've recently encountered severe lagging and performance issues. How can I resolve this?

If you're experiencing lag or performance issues in Heptabase, this guide can help identify common causes and provide solutions.

Whiteboard Performance Issues

Lag often occurs if your whiteboard has many elements:

  • Having over 100~150 cards on one whiteboard can cause noticeable lag. The more cards, the worse the lag.

  • Even fewer than 100 cards can create lag if there are many images, videos, large text blocks, extensive code or math blocks, or large mind maps on the whiteboard.

Recommendation:

  • Split content across multiple sub-whiteboards. Performance is independent between whiteboards.

  • Fold cards and expand them only when necessary.

Individual Card Performance Issues

Editing individual cards may lag if:

  • The card has tens of thousands of words or large tables (hundreds of rows and columns).

  • The card references or is referenced by over 100 other cards.

  • The card includes many embedded images, videos, or large code blocks.

Recommendation:

  • Temporarily split large content into multiple smaller cards.

Tag App Performance Issues

The Tag app may lag in these scenarios:

  • You have more than 100 tags, causing slight delays when opening the app.

  • A single tag includes over 100 cards, causing lag during editing.

Recommendation:

  • Reduce the number of cards per tag if possible.

Performance Issues After Large Data Imports

Importing large amounts of data (e.g., from Notion, Obsidian, Readwise, or Kobo) can affect overall performance and synchronization.

Recommendation:

  • If you experience lag after data imports, contact customer support immediately.

Reporting Performance Issues

If you experience performance and lag issues, whether or not you match the above scenarios, please contact our customer support team to report the issue. We will notify you once improvements are made.

Even if you don't meet the above scenarios but are still encountering performance issues, please contact our customer support team immediately. We will help investigate potential causes.
