Monthly allowances and model availability may change. New provider models are not automatically available and may need compatibility work.
Pro users are automatically enrolled in an AI trial at no extra cost to try AI features.
AI credits cover the AI agent, AI Tutor, video transcripts, Insight generator, and voice notes. PDF parsing does not consume AI credits.
PDF parsing: Extracts text and OCR content so AI can read a PDF. It does not create highlights.
PDF highlighting: A manual reading feature that turns selected passages into Highlight cards.
All plans can continue using voice notes after AI credits reach zero. Voice notes still consume credits whenever credits are available.
Free trial
Whichever plan you start with, the trial includes unlimited PDF uploads, unlimited PDF parsing, and the same AI credits as Premium. It lasts up to 7 days or until the trial credits run out, whichever comes first.
When the 7-day trial ends and your paid subscription starts, your AI credits reset for your selected plan.
If trial credits run out earlier, you can start your paid subscription immediately without waiting for day 7.
Model access and more AI usage
Open the usage section (View usage / Usage) in Settings → AI Features to check your included credits, usage, remaining credits, and next reset date. Choose an option based on what you need:
Upgrade to Premium or Premium+
Pro users get more AI credits and access to the OpenAI and Anthropic models supported by Heptabase.
On-demand usage
Continue using AI Tutor and other features that consume Heptabase AI credits after included credits run out.
Your own API key
Use your OpenAI or Anthropic API key in the AI agent. This does not apply to AI Tutor. Set up your API key.
Sign in with Codex
Use supported models in the AI agent, including after Heptabase credits run out. This does not currently apply to AI Tutor.
Enable on-demand usage
Open Settings → AI Features.
Turn on on-demand usage and set a monthly spending limit.
Your included monthly credits are used first; pay-as-you-go usage starts only after they run out. Read the on-demand usage guide.
Basic models on Premium and Premium+
After included credits run out, Basic models can still read, search, and answer for free. Creating or editing content requires on-demand usage to be enabled with enough remaining allowance.
A run consumes on-demand usage only if the agent successfully completes a content change.
Read-only conversations remain free. Without available on-demand usage, the agent cannot create or edit content.
Plan changes and billing
Subscription charges and AI credits are separate. A prorated charge or account balance credit is not an AI credit balance. Before confirming a change, review its charge, effective date, and Total due today. After it takes effect, check Settings → AI Features → Usage for updated credits and the next reset date.
Monthly / yearly, same tier
Review the change in Manage Subscription. Do not infer your AI credit balance or reset date from the payment amount or annual renewal date; check Usage after the change.
Upgrade your tier
Use the in-app upgrade flow. A paid upgrade that keeps the same billing interval (monthly or yearly) does not restart the billing cycle. The charge accounts for remaining time and the unused value of your current plan.
Downgrade your tier
Use Manage Subscription. Once the change takes effect, check Usage for the updated AI allowance.
Do not rely on repeated downgrades and upgrades to obtain extra AI credits. If a specific balance or reset date affects your decision, contact in-app support before changing plans. Support can also help with other plan-change questions.
Early bird Pro: You can keep your original Pro price forever. Premium and Premium+ cost more to provide and do not have an additional early bird discount. If you upgrade and later return to Pro, your original early bird price is restored.
Users who subscribed before December 2025 are on Pro. Premium and Premium+ became available to new and existing users in December 2025.
