Important: We keep 60 days of version history, but retention does not mean every saved version can be restored directly in the app. For snapshots older than 30 days, preview and restore may be restricted on your account. If the app asks you to contact in-app support, contact us for help with that snapshot.
For important content you want to keep beyond the retention period, export the card directly or go to Settings → Backup → Export now to export a full backup.
Before restoring a version
Connect to the internet. You may see locally available snapshots while offline, but restoring a version requires an online connection.
Check account access. Restoring requires an active subscription or eligible early-adopter single-device access. The app will prompt you to subscribe if your account is not eligible.
If a whiteboard version cannot be restored, contact support. A snapshot saved with a different Heptabase data format may be blocked from direct restore for compatibility reasons.
Cards, journals, and text elements
Note: Card version history records card content, but does not currently include tag/database property changes. Editing a date, number, or other property cannot be restored from Version History.
When you edit a card, journal, text element, or highlight, the system creates a version snapshot and starts a 3-minute timer. Any additional edits within this 3-minute window update the snapshot. If you pause editing for 3 minutes, the snapshot saves permanently.
If continuous editing lasts more than 10 minutes, the system automatically creates a new snapshot.
Snapshots made offline are uploaded once you're back online, keeping versions organized by device and timestamp. If synchronization hasn't been enabled, snapshots remain only on your device.
Whiteboard history
The system automatically saves whiteboard versions every 10 minutes. Each version includes a summary of objects (such as sections, texts, mindmaps, and cards), making it easier to identify the version you wish to restore.
Restoring a whiteboard version recovers only layout, sections, text content, mindmaps, and card positions and colors. To restore card contents, use the card's own version history.
If you've deleted cards or whiteboards, these must be restored from the trash, not from version history.
Restoring to an earlier version automatically saves your current state, so you don’t need to manually save beforehand. If you still prefer to manually save, press:
